As you will no doubt have seen in recent months, the damage and devastation caused by Hurricane Helene to communities in Western North Carolina has been severe. Recovery efforts from all corners of society have been immense, but Helene’s impact on homes, infrastructure and transport continues to be felt.
Here at Highland Canine Training, we have extremely close ties to the western part of our home state. We have a professional dog trainer based in Asheville, and a couple of years ago, our nonprofit delivered a therapy dog to Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office. In recent months, our team has made several trips out to the areas affected by Helene, accompanied by therapy dogs and service dogs in training. We have also delivered supplies that were generously donated at our training center in Harmony, NC. These efforts are designed to help provide some comfort and reassurance to those who are still rebuilding their lives after the hurricane.
With the holiday season approaching, many of us will be busy making plans to see friends and family and engage in many traditions of the season. For families in Western North Carolina, however, it is hard for them to see past the next day or next week, as they attempt to recover from the damage left behind by Helene. Those families with younger children cannot prioritize purchasing gifts when their lives have been turned upside down due to this natural disaster. With this in mind, we want to help those families – and you can too.
How you can help
We have launched a Toy Drive to provide gifts for children in Western North Carolina this Christmas. These gifts will spread some joy and cheer to families at the end of a traumatic year.
There are two ways you can help donate directly to the Toy Drive:
- Donate a toy. New, unwrapped toys for children of all ages can be delivered to one of two dropoff locations in Iredell County:
– Highland Canine Training’s Training Center (located at 145 Foxfield Dr, Harmony, NC 28634)
– Iredell Companion Animal Hospital (located at 1512 Davie Ave, Statesville, NC 28677) - Purchase from our Amazon wishlist. Visit our Amazon wishlist, where you can select gifts to be delivered straight to our Training Center address.
The deadline for donations is Saturday December 14, 2024. We will be wrapping toys for delivery in the week prior to Christmas.
In addition, spreading the word about the Toy Drive is a great way to inform as many members of our community as possible! Sharing this article or our Facebook post with your friends and family is a great way to increase its reach.
Thank you for your generosity and support! If you have any questions about our Toy Drive, please contact us at training@highlandcanine.com, or call our toll-free number on (866) 200-2207.
