Personal Protection Dogs 101
Thinking about buying a personal protection dog? Are you in the process of buying one? Have you recently bought one? We would like to spend some time sharing knowledge we have gained over the years about common pitfalls and misconceptions about buying, training and owning a protection dog. We could write a novel based on personal experience, let alone information that could be found on the internet. We will do our best to get a good amount of important questions and answers in this section. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to email us at policek9@highlandcanine.com.
There are many reasons why someone would need a personal protection dog. It is a good feeling to know that your best friend and companion is also your alarm system, pepper spray and loaded pistol. If trained correctly this pistol will not run out of bullets. Whether you are a high profile celebrity, business owner housewife, abuse victim or concerned parent, if you are considering buying a personal protection dog you must have concerns about you or one of your family member’s safety. This emotion based decision can lead people to rush into purchases without doing the proper research. Inevitably they end up buying an overpriced and under-performing dog. Please, take the time to do your research about the trainer and the dog before making a purchase.
There are a couple common misconceptions when it comes to breeds of personal protection dogs. The first thing you must understand is that not all breeds are capable of being protection dogs. Second thing is that not all dogs in the same breed are capable of being protection dogs. Meaning, we prefer to use Belgian Malinois and German Shepherds for our police and personal protection dogs. Not to mention when trained properly they make the perfect family companion. Eastern European and Western European bloodlines are completely different, as are Czech lines. All of these are different than domestics! Not to say you couldn’t find a protection dog in any of these bloodlines, just important to understand each bloodline affects drive, environmental stability, temperament, etc. All of which are important in choosing a protection dog.
Other popular breeds used for personal protection are Cane Corsos, Doberman Pinchers, Bouvier, Presa Canario, Rottweiler, American Pitbull and American Bulldog. It is much harder to find quality working dogs in these breeds, especially domestically. This is because many domestic dogs have been breed for looks instead of working ability.
Here are Highland Canine we understand that buying a personal protection dog is a big commitment, financially and emotionally. This is why we spend so much time working with breeders, doing evaluations and testing our dogs. We want to ensure that all of our customers are 100% satisfied with their purchase.
At least once a week we are contacted by someone wanting to buy a puppy and have it trained as a personal protection dog. It is important to understand that although you may be able to pick out the superior dog in the litter, there is no guarantee that they will make a good protection dog. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes of training protection dogs that many people do not understand.
Our breeders begin training for protection dogs at 8 weeks old. They start with drive development, socialization, environmental stability and basic obedience. They are socialized with other dogs, people, noises, places, floors. This process goes on for almost a year. We prefer to get our dogs “green” between 11-18 months old. By this time we know which dogs can handle the intensive training they must go through in order to make top notch protection dogs. And yes, we train our own dogs at our facility in Harmony, NC.
Although some companies believe that Level Protection 1, 2, and 3 are levels at which companies can take advantage of you, we find it important to categorize different levels in order to meet each clients need. For instance, some people are not comfortable or cannot handle a dog that will bite on command. They would rather have a deterrent, not a lethal force. For this client we would offer a Level 1 dog. This dog will alert to homeowners when they feel there is a threat to the homeowner.
For someone looking for a dog that will chase, apprehend, bite, and hold until given a verbal command to release, then a Level 2 dog would be a good fit. Level 3 includes everything in Level 1 and 2, plus the ability to subdue multiple attackers, a bark and hold, and any personal bells and whistles a client may want. All of our protection dogs have completed our on and off leash obedience course so it is easy for our clients to handle their dog in any situation with comfort.
Dog breeding is a very long process. Out of a litter of 10 usually only 3 pups will be qualified to go through our rigorous training which leaves us with 7 pups that we need to adopt out, another long process. For this reason we use professional breeders and vendors and import dogs so that we can spend our time on the most important aspect, training your dog for your needs.
All of Highland Canine Training’s dogs are held to the highest standards possible. For this reason it is essential for us to socialize our dogs at a very early age to different ages, genders and ethnicities of people. When our dogs do not detect a threat to you or your family they become another family companion. Our training makes it easy for you to introduce your dog to new people, environments and situations without feeling uneasy about having a trained protection dog. With that said, your children can still play and rough house with each other without the dog deeming them as a threat!
If you search hard enough you can find personal protection dogs for $7,000 and you can find them for $100,000. You might spend $30,000 and get a dog that doesn’t work for you, has bad hips, or wouldn’t actually bite anything other than a sleeve!
We can tell you from experience, there is not one thing that a $100,000 dog will do that one of mourLevel 3 Protection dogs would not. Now, there is a significant difference in price from a dog that will bark on command or bark when a threat is assessed, compared to a dog that can subdue multiple intruders, do building searches, perimeter checks, etc. It is much harder to find, and thus much more expensive to buy a dog that is capable of being trained to do the latter! Not to mention, it takes 4 times as much time to train a dog of that caliber. You do not always get what you pay for when it comes to dogs.
What is included depends on what level you are buying. We train our dogs to our clients needs so one client may need something different then another client. We always include a 2 day handlers course where you and your family learn how to handle the dog and can ask any questions that you may have about your dog or its training. We believe it is important to make sure you feel 100% comfortable with your new dog. We also include a lifetime guarantee on our dog’s training.
While it is possible to get a dog straight from Europe we would not suggest it. It is quite common that when buying a dog from Europe owners feel like they are getting a better deal. But, knowing that many Americans do not know the difference between a Schutzhund or titled dog, a police dog and a personal protection dog it is easy to be taken advantage of or mislead. We have had dozens of clients that bought dogs straight from Europe that were not satisfied with the dog and did not get what they asked for. After going through the hassle of buying a dog from Europe they were forced to spend more money just to fix it! For this reason it is important to have a strong line of communication with the company that you choose. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assist you in any way possible to ensure your satisfaction in the process. We consider our clients and our dogs part of our family, not just another sale.
Youtube “Schutzhund Dogs” and watch some videos. It’s quite amazing how well they listen, how fast they move and how hard it looks like they bite. Schutzhund dog’s make amazing dogs but don’t be so fast to buy a protection dog because you see SchH next to it.
Schutzhund dogs are sport dogs. While their obedience is impeccable and their jaws are strong, they are not trained for personal protection. Protection dogs have two different driving factors, prey and defense. Prey is the ability to chase and bite, which is the majority of Schutzhund dogs. This is fun for the dogs. They enjoy this and look forward to doing it. Why do you think dogs like chasing tennis balls? Defense is stressful for a dog, but necessary to have on protection dog.
Put it this way, someone breaks into your house and your dog chases them out of the house. For a dog this if fun, but what happens if the person breaking into your house begins to fight the dog? Hit him with a flashlight? Kick him? Many Schutzhund dogs will shy away in fear because it just became less fun and more stressful. Our dogs are taught that when confronted with pressure they must handle it and maintain focused on the task at hand…which in most cases is subduing the intruder and protecting the owners until help arrives.
In order to keep your dog sharp for years to come we suggest that you have follow-up sessions with us once every 9-12 months. This will give us time to meet up, whether we come to you or you come here. It will also give us a chance to discuss any questions you may have. Maintain the dogs bite work and obedience, as well as add any new components to protecting you and your family you may think of.
Your best bet is to contact us so we can set you up with our questionnaire. This way we can better assess the needs of you, your family, or your business. After receiving the questionnaire we will begin a line of communication which won’t end until long after you are happy with your dog in your home. After we receive a deposit we will set forth and find the perfect dog for you. This usually only takes a week or two. On average, once we find you the right dog we can have him completely finished and delivered to you in less then 16 weeks. We are always picking up and training personal protection dogs. Who knows, the perfect dog for you could be at our location right now! Contact us today or fill out our Protection Dog Questionnaire to find out.
Personal and Business Protection Dogs
A protection dog is an asset to someone who feels that either themselves, their family members, their home or their business may one day be in danger. It is better to be prepared for a potential threat then to deal with the consequences afterwards. For this reason personal protection dogs are great for concerned parents, females, celebrities, business owners and high profile individuals. Not only can these dogs become your best friend and companion, they may also make the difference in your safety one day.
Personal protection dogs are used to guard individuals, businesses and families. Unlike alarm systems they do not have to be activated. Unlike guns they do not have to be loaded. Our personal protection dogs are always on duty. Even in passive mode they recognize and analyze potential threats. They are ready to eliminate a potential threat at any given moment. Our dogs are trained to go everywhere that you do. They will protect you at your home, in your car, at your business, at the market, at a friends house and even out jogging. Our job is to make them the best protection dog possible. The dog’s job is to keep you, your family and your business safe and protected.
We do not believe in throwing fancy names and tricks on our dogs. Most tricks and commands other companies give are useless, not practical, and would not work in real life. We believe in training our dogs in real life scenarios, not Titled Dog “real life scenarios”. If it talks about how it uses bamboo sticks on a personal protection website you are buying a Schutzhund Dog, not a personal protection dog. There is a HUGE difference. If the only bite work they offer to show you is someone in a full bite suit, or hiding a full sleeve under a XXXL hoodie, you are buying an equipment oriented dog. Equipment orientation is when a dog will bite someone only when they are wearing a bite sleeve or bite suit. Personal Protection dogs should be man oriented, not equipment oriented. How often will a threat be wearing a bite suit or sleeve?
Many companies will get by with doing this because they do not have a decoy capable of wearing a hidden sleeve. Although a hidden sleeve does not offer the decoy a lot of protection, it is a true test of the dogs ability to bite in “real life scenarios”. Also, make sure you are looking for a dog that has a full grip. You want the dogs molars to be biting down. Companies that offer dogs that bite repeatedly with their front K9’s are not offering properly trained dogs. These dogs are more likely to break their front teeth. The dog’s grip should be full and they should not let go unless re-gripping or if they are given the out command.
At Highland Canine we train our protection dogs to the same standards as our Military and Police K9‘s. We feel that a dog that is not trained properly is more of a liability than it is an asset. This is why Highland Canine only produces top notch dogs for our clients.
