Belinda Tsakonas

Scranton, PA Dog Trainer

Originally from New Jersey, Belinda moved to Scranton, PA at a young age – and has lived there ever since.

Belinda’s interest in dog training started at the age of 12, when she got her first dog named Tweak. She trained Tweak in basic obedience, and later taught her to perform tricks.

In 2009, Belinda enlisted in the U.S. Marines as a Combat Engineer. Upon graduating high school, she served active duty for over seven years, including a deployment to Afghanistan in 2013/2014. After her deployment, Belinda was stationed at MCB Quantico VA, where she was an instructor for three years. She was medically retired in 2018, at which point she had to figure out her next career move.

Having a service-related disability, Belinda started to think about her fellow veterans and people who might be struggling with disabilities – and how she could help then. She considered how service dogs help people with daily tasks that would be otherwise seemingly impossible. She got a German Shepherd puppy named Grace, and started to train her for service work, but unfortunately her injury got worse and she had to halt the training.

With her injury stabilized, Belinda started to look for somewhere to learn how to train dogs. Her research led her to the School for Dog Trainers based in North Carolina, where she completed the intensive 24-week Master Dog Trainer program. She moved, with Grace, to the Main Campus.

After completing the program, she started an internship with Highland Canine Training as a service dog and pet dog trainer, before moving back to Scranton to offer professional dog training services to dog owners in the local area.

“There is a real sense of accomplishment in teaching owners and service dog handlers how to communicate with their dog or service dog,” says Belinda. “I enjoy seeing the progress the dogs make, from day to day and week to week.

Improving the bond between owners and their dogs is so important to me. Communication is absolutely key to a successful relationship between dogs and humans, and I enjoy seeing the difference I can make to a family’s life – and a dog’s life – through this.

I’m excited to help dog owners in Scranton to achieve their goals. I truly believe that through consistent dog training, we can make life better for everyone.”
