Over several years, Highland Canine Training has developed a reputation for diagnosing and resolving troublesome dog behaviors. Matt Sheflin

Matt grew up with many pets, from rats to quarter horses. He learned how to race homing pigeons, ride horses and obedience train dogs from his father and trained his first upland gun dog, a black Labrador named Thor, at 16 years old. As a teenager, he knew how to communicate clearly and consistently to build a relationship of trust and understanding with dogs. He also knew how to use a choke chain while applying gentle pressure during obedience training.
How things change. Matt has learned a lot since those days, and although he no longer uses choke chains. As a balanced dog trainer, he implements the use of various tools to reduce conflict and increase engagement between pets and their owners.
Matt specializes in helping owners learn how to communicate with their dogs to reinforce wanted behaviors and replace unwanted behaviors with constructive activities. From potty training, nipping, destructive behaviors or general hyperactivity to issues of fear, territorial or dominance aggression, he teaches owners how to redirect their dogs behavior to be better family members and more appropriate citizens in public, giving both dog and owner more freedom and less conflict.

Board and Train Programs
We are proud to offer Board and Train programs for our clients in the Denver area.
Our Board & Train programs allow you to leave your dog with our professional dog trainer for three or six weeks. During that time, we will work with your dog on a daily basis to resolve problematic behaviors. When you pick up your dog, we’ll show you how to maintain your dog’s new behaviors.

Our trainers offer a wide variety of group dog training classes. This is perfect for socializing your dog in a safe environment. Meeting other pups and different people in a group class setting helps your dog to adapt to new environments and learn new skills.
Our curriculum includes basic obedience, advanced obedience, foundational search and rescue, scent work and puppy classes among others. These classes typically run for six weeks, with classes taking place once a week.

Our private lessons and behavioral modification programs help you to achieve the results you need with your dog.
With private lessons, our trainers come to your home once per week. Following an initial evaluation, our trainers use their knowledge and experience to develop an action plan to help you achieve your goals.
